Welcome to Michigan's first prescription drug discount web site. As Michigan 's Attorney General, Jennifer Granholm was
responsible for bringing millions of dollars back to the state from pharmaceutical companies who were most interested in draining
the pocketbooks of Michigan citizens.
And now, through her leadership as the state's executive, Governor Granholm has created this drug discount resource - already visited by thousands of Michigan citizens. The site, however, only represents one way the state of Michigan has achieved significant prescription drug savings over the last several years.
The Granholm Administration has ardently fought to preserve Medicaid spending, thus maintaining quality health care services for
the most vulnerable people. By preserving Medicaid spending and investing those resources and other funds wisely, Michigan has continued
to provide a full range of health care benefits - including prescription drug coverage - to more than 1.6 Michigan citizens,
despite considerable pressure from the Legislature to cut services for children, disabled adults, and seniors.
In 2003, Governor Granholm first pioneered the now federally titled Michigan Multi-State Prescription Drug Pool during a meeting of the National Governors Association. In March 2003, both Vermont and Michigan began to generate significant levels of savings and rebate revenue as a result of their participation in this ambitious endeavor. Today, the multi-state Medicaid initiative has grown to 13 states, including Nevada, New Hampshire, Alaska, Minnesota, Tennessee, Hawaii, Kentucky, Montana, New York, South Carolina, and Georgia which significantly enhances the size of the pool.
Governor Granholm also created the MI-Rx prescription drug discount program, a prescription drug discount card that now saves
42,000 Michigan citizens an average of 25 percent on their prescription drug costs every day.
Each month, these citizens save about $130,000 per month - at no cost to the state. In 2006, those citizens saved $2 million, thanks to the
Governor's free discount card.
In her 2006 State of the State Address, Governor Granholm proposed a revolutionary new way to address the rising cost of health care in Michigan and the burden it places on our families and our businesses. Through a creative strategy to dramatically expand access to quality, affordable health insurance - including prescription drug coverage - the Michigan First Health Care Plan will give all uninsured Michigan citizens access to affordable private health care plans without increasing state spending or increasing taxes. The Governor's plan will be guided by principles of fairness and ability to pay, and individuals with low incomes will pay minimal out-of-pocket costs. Everyone will pay something and people enrolled in the program are expected to increase their contribution as their incomes rise.
In 2006, Governor Granholm created this prescription drug pricing web site - michigandrugprices.com - a resource which allows consumers to search more than 150 commonly prescribed prescription drugs in Michigan for the lowest possible price. Users can search this web site by zip code, city, or pharmacy for the lowest cost of drugs as far as 100 miles away.
